The legend is a story of love, jealousy and revenge that dates back to around the year 1000, during the domination of the Moors in Sicily, and is set in the ancient district of Palermo of Kalsa.

There lived a beautiful girl who fascinated a Moor so much that he wanted to show her his uncontrollable love, but he carried with him a great secret: shortly thereafter he planned to return to the East where a wife and children were waiting for him.

Hurt in her pride and betrayed by what she believed to be her great love, she planned her revenge, and during one night, she killed him and cut off his head so that her beloved would stay with her forever.

With the head, hence the name Moor's head or Turk's head, he made it a vase where he planted basil, a plant linked to a divine symbolism and always associated with sacredness.

From that moment on, the basil grew luxuriantly, according to legend, thanks to the girl's tears. The beauty of that plant, however, awakened the envy of the other inhabitants of the neighbourhood who then had the artisans build terracotta pots in the shape of a Moor's head
